Southern Shaolin Kung Fu traces its origins to three cities of Fujian, there are located in Fuqing, Putian and Quanzhou. The Southern Shaolin Temple of Putian situated in Lin Shan Village, Jiulian Mountain, Xitianwei town, it's about 16 kilometers to the northwest of Putian City. The Southern Shaolin Temple was built in the first year of Yongding of Chen in the Southern Dynasties (557 AD), only 61 years late than Songshan Shaolin Temple.

There are two major groups of Shaolin Kung Fu, Northern Shaolin Kung Fu refer to Songshan Temple in Henan Province, and Southern Shaolin Kung Fu refer to those in Fujian Province. However, Southern Shaolin Temple was burned down once by the Qing Regime during the reign of the Qing Emperor Kangxi. �

On April 25th, 1992, the Southern Shaolin Temple confirmation conference was held in the Beijing People's Conference Hall. The conference officially approved the reconstruction of the Southern Shaolin Temple. After the press conference, the Xin Hua News Agency distributed press releases to the world announcing that the Southern Shaolin Temple was to be rebuilt at Fujian Putian. The Central News Agency also carried an article on April 26th stating, "Experts revealed the historically secret Southern Shaolin Temple to be rebuilt at Fujian".

Putian Shaolin Temple Scenic Spot consists some sections area including Southern Shaolin Temple, Purple Clouds and Spectacular Rocky Peak, Guandi Temple, Nine Herds Ancestral Temple and Jiuhua Mountain Cliff. There is also keeping Statue of Mazu - The Sea Goddess, religious Lin Zhaoen, Lin Zexu thenational hero, and famous Neo-Confucianism Zhu Xi's relics and stone engraving.
