Business in Putian
Since long time ago, Putian has become an export base of Fujian's products. The popular food-products of Putian are rice noodles, sugar and fruits including loquat, longan, lychee and pomelo. Pillar industries of Putian are shoe-making, textile and garment, food processing, forest products processing, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and medical devices manufacturing.��Private companies dominate the economy of Putian. In 2007, the industrial output of private enterprises was RMB 58.9 billion, accounting for 80.9% of the Putian's total.
Putian also rich in marine resources from hundred of its neighboring islands, such as Pinghai, Zhongmen, and Meizhou, as well as from the three bays of Meizhou, Pinghai and Xinghua. Putian has a coastline measuring 343.6 kilometers, making up 10.3 percent of the Fujian's total length.
Tourism is considered as major industry in Putian's service sector. Base on 2007 data, the number of domestic tourists to Putian grew by 7.2% to 4.7 million, while the revenue in tourism reached RMB 4.0 billion, gaining 22.4% growth. However, the number of foreign visitors dropped by 15.3% to 6,800 in the same year.
In 2007, Putian's foreign trade grew by 26.1% to US$2.2 billion. Taiwan and the U.S. are the two largest trading partners for imports and exports. The utilized FDI reached US$514 million, of which 87.5% was from the manufacturing sector.
