Guanghua Temple

Guanghua Temple is situated at the foot of Fenghuang Mountain, about two kilometers south of Putian City in Fujian Province. Fenghuang (Phoenix) Mountain surround by peaceful and verdant landscape, evergreen covering the mountain serving wonderful panorama. Long time ago, the study of Buddhism once bloomed in this place. Covering an area of 33 hectares, Guanghua Temple is one of the Key Cultural Relic under Fujian government’s protection.

Guanghua Temple was built in 558 AD during the Southern Dynasties era, with the first master is Jinxian Zen-Master, so the temple was known as Jinxian Court. In 589, the temple was expanded under the guidance of Master Shanwuwei , and later renamed as Jinshan Monastery. Master Shanwuwei was one of the temple's founders who also visited Japan, so some Japanese Buddhists arrived here as well.

Guanghua Temple became well known during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and enjoy the peak of its glory in the Song Dynasty (960-1279), where over one thousand monks and nuns practiced Buddhism at this environment. However, Guanghua Temple was collapsed by fire during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), but later had been gradually restored to its former glory, during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and Qing Dynasty (1644–1911).
