Yongding
Yongding County is a county under the administration of Longyan Prefecture, in of Fujian Province, China. Covering an area of 2500 km² (1000 square miles), Yongding County is located in southeastern of Longyan Prefecture, on the border of Fujian-Guangdong Province. Similar to other counties of Fujian province, Yongding region is mostly hilly, about 80% hills and mountains, 10% water or rivers, and 10% plain fields.
Yongding County is known as the home of many Hakka families. It has a population of about 400,000, with more than 99% are Hakka, the rest being Minnan people. Tulou is a kind of traditional rammed stronghold of the Hakkas. The resident building can be round and square. In Yongding County, there are three hundred and sixty round houses and four thousand square houses. The grand complex of Hakka residence in Yongding show best the intelligence of the Hakka, added luster to Chinese traditional architecture.
Yongding also an important tobacco producer. The cultivation of tobacco started in Wan Li era of the Ming Dynasty. Yongding was honored as the "home of tobacco" in the early 20th century. Although its significance has declined in recent years, Yongding is still one of the most important tobacco producing areas in the region. Many top brand Chinese cigarettes contain Yongding leaf.
