Songxi County
Songxi County is a county in Nanping, Fujian, China. Songxi County, located in the northern part of Fujian, is an important gateway to Zhejiang Province and enjoys a reputation of "the town of the sword." The county gets its name from the Song River (Pine River), as in the ancient times, the bank of the river was planted with pine trees.
Covering an area of 1043 square kilometres, Songxi County has a long history of more than 1700 years, which indicates that this historical county can be of profound culture, and rich in historical sites and relics.
Some years ago, there were more than 70 historical sites discovered on the bank of Song River, and experts evacuated a lot of ancient relics from the Zhang-Zhou Period (between 1766 BC and 256 BC), such as stone spears, stone axes, and pottery.When travelling to Songxi, you may probably be told that Songxi has three treasures: Zhanlu sword, Jiulongyao porcelain and Songxi woodcut.
Zhanlu sword is one of the five legendary swords of China in the ancient times. It is said the first Zhanlu sword was made in a mountain of Songxi by Ou Yezi in Spring and Autumn Period, and the sword enjoyed a reputation of the first sword in the world.
Nowadays, you can find various shapes of swords for different usages in the county, totally 30 series. There is Taiji sword, the replica of ancient sword and many others. Every year, lots of visitors coming to Songxi County would like to buy a sword either for their collection or for decoration.
Jiulongyao Porcelain, or Nine dragon Kiln, has more than a thousand years of history, and is well-known for its porcelain.
The porcelain in Jiulongyao are exquisite in handicraft, hard and smooth in texture. Considered as one of the best handiworks in Fujian, nowadays, Jiulongyao porcelain is famous around the world. The porcelain wares have been sold to many foreign countries.
Songxi woodcut. Woodcut of Songxi is the legacy of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The source of the woodcut is mainly from the life in North Fujian. As a folk art, the woodcut plays an important role in the printmaking. And in 2000, Songxi County was elected as the town of woodcut picture.
